Celebrating one year at OG with our Legal Manager, Suki Rees

Since joining Opportunity Green a year ago as a Legal Manager, Suki has been pivotal in developing OG’s legal strategy to launch our work in a new sector: agriculture.

What drew you to work at OG?

The triple planetary crisis is impossible to ignore, and so too was the feeling that I could be doing more to try and combat it! When I first came across OG, I was impressed by the huge ambition and achievement of what was then a small legal team and wanted to be a part of it. I wanted to do work that aligns with my personal values and I am very grateful to be able to do that at OG. While individual action is important in combating the climate crisis, systemic change is needed.

What has changed since you started?

We are unlocking new ways of working across our teams. As our practice areas develop, we are able to collaborate more with a view to maximising the impact of our work. I work on agriculture, which is a sprawling sector. Being able to draw on the vast expertise of my colleagues across diplomacy, analytics and comms teams has been incredibly valuable at each stage of my work so far.

It would be remiss not to also mention the evolution of the coffee-making paraphernalia in our London office – culminating in the beautiful new (to us) coffee machine which arrived this week. This is very exciting for caffeine-dependent people like me...

What inspires you about what you’re working on?

The ability we have to create change if we work together, even in the face of a tapestry of connected climate and justice issues that need to be addressed. If we all pull at a thread, eventually the tapestry will unravel and can be remade.  My colleagues, as well as people working at other organisations focusing on the climate impacts of agriculture who I have been fortunate enough to connect with during the past year, inspire me to think bigger and do better.

What are you looking forward to in the coming year?

Taking our first legal action to create accountability for greenhouse gas emissions from the agriculture sector – watch this space! I am also looking forward to continuing to expand my knowledge of the sector on a global scale, ensuring the action we take contributes toward a just transition.
