UN submission on corporate accountability in the context of human rights and climate change

In advance of the 56th Session of the Human Rights Council in 2024, we responded to the Special Rapporteur on climate change’s call for inputs on “corporate accountability in the context of human rights and climate change”.

Our submission focused on the aviation and shipping industries which are major contributors to the climate crisis, yet poorly regulated in terms of greenhouse gas emissions.

We highlighted climate change risks, and specifically climate change litigation risks, for the shipping industry, particularly with a view to current large-scale investments into liquefied natural gas as a “transitional fuel”.

We also provided evidence in respect to potential greenwashing practices by the aviation industry and outlined greenwashing litigation targeting the aviation industry to date.
